Doug Kenney of Tampa led 18 trucks
into the high banks of DeSoto Speedway for a Friday night
Independence Day celebration and drove away with the
checkered flag and the top purse of $1000. ``We've been here before but it's the first time I've won,'' Kenney said. ``This is really great. We've been doing this a couple of years and this is our first feature win. Everything just came together tonight.'' Kenney claimed the win in the hard-fought 50-lap American Race Truck feature by edging out former Pro Figure 8 driver, Tovia Grenewicz of Hudson. ``I started running the high groove at the beginning but when they started coming underneath I had to go to the bottom,'' Grenewicz said. ``I need new tires. I started getting loose at the end.'' Ralph Chastain of Ft Myers also had a bit of problem with his setup, but was able to claim third place in the feature. ``I was running loose the whole race,'' he said. ``I had to back off a little. it was a really tough race. I like this track, it's a lot of fun. I had a little trouble with the lap traffic but it's nothing a little fiberglass won't fix.'' The high-powered truck event ended the evening of racing action that feature a line-up of 102 stock cars competing in six different events. In the Discount Auto Parts Novice Stock Joe Wengerd of Sarasota took his first feature win of the season. ``This is the first time I've drove to the front,'' said the quiet spoken driver. ``Last year I had two win because of TDQ's. The only thing I've done different is put more used rubber on it.'' A pair of fast rising female stars in the Novice Stock claimed the next two spots. Sue Nicholas of Venice placed second and Peggy Hurst of Sarasota took third place. Elbert Butts decided to try his driving skills at DeSoto Speedway and the Arcadia resident drove away with his first ever checkered flag in the Express Personnel Services Pure Stock event. ``First win here and the first night ever running this track,'' Butts said. ``I just stayed out of trouble and kept my cool. I think everyone was getting a litlle over-anxious but this car will handle. The main thing is keep that cool, and it paid off.'' David "Smokey" Dick of Parrish collected second place and Chuck Mattingly placed third. In the Callaghan Tire Open Wheel Modifieds Teddy Nelson of Pinellas Park took his fourth win of the season. ``Hopefully we've off the monkey off our back after three bad weeks,'' Nelson said. ``The cars running pretty good.'' The 25-lap event featured a highly competitive and growing field of drivers gearing up for their next 50-lap event after the mid-season break. Steve Hauser Jr. of Parrish collected second and Dwayne Lawhon of Plant City placed third. Bradenton's Rocco Rannallo took fourth in the feature with Parrish's well-known Pro Figure 8 driver, Patrick Hughes, taking fifth place in his debut of his Yuffe's sponsored Open Wheel Modified. Bradenton's old pro, Steve Gainey, and the up-and-coming rookie, Tommy Younkman of Sarasota, blaze to a one-two finish in the MEI Street Stock feature event. Gainey used his more than 15 years driving experience to out power the young fireball to the finish line. ``I want to give thanks to Fred at Fred's Garage,'' Gainey said. ``Man he builts some kind of car. The old thing doesn't look too great but she gets with the program.'' Bill Close of Bradenton took third in the action packed event. In the Q Auto & Injury Attorney Mini Stock Tommy Huffstutler of Bradenton took his sixth win. Arlin Pope of Bradenton collected second place and Todd Blevins of St Pete placed third. |
